If we’re educated enough to know, we’re educated enough to know we still know very little about racism in this country. I’m doing my best to LISTEN and LEARN during this past week. It goes without saying
The Little Red Planet is ANTI - RACIST. We are a brand and now community based on love and equality first and foremost. But there are so many layers - everyone can do better.
It starts with listening - listening to black voices. Black authors, musicians, designers, artists, businessman, and businesswomen, children, friends and neighbors. And also educating ourselves, this is paramount. I thought I would offer some great resources for you and your children that I'm finding helpful in navigating this a bit better so that I may be able to put my words into action. We can never claim to know someone else’s experience in this lifetime but empathy and unity key.
There is a LIVE RALLY streaming TONIGHT at 7 pm on Facebook called Kidlit Rally (click on link) organized by award winning author (and Mars commencement speaker at Mary McDowell Friends School) Kwame Alexander for the kids. It's organized by The Brown Bookshelf (click on link), a website designed to increase awareness of the myriad Black voices writing for young readers. I highly encourage you check out their website, the books they suggest, and their Facebook page. The rally will be live on their page.
I also came across this post by @theconsciouskid (another fantastic feed to follow if your are not already) and wanted to share. I thought it was direct and helpful (click on handle). It gives us five action steps we can do, some of which have already affected the George Floyd case.
And here are some great books for the parents-
White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo
The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander
Women, Race & Class by Angela Y. Davis
So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo
Here's some great films we can learn from as well:
The Hate you Give
American Son
Dear White People
If Beale St Could Talk
When They See Us
See You Yesterday
American Son
Sending so much love during these unprecedented and challenging times.
